Welcome
Welcome to sethshulman.com, website of journalist and author Seth Shulman. This site offers information about my books, links to my articles and public appearances, as well as some additional notes about me and my work.
My Books
My latest book, The Telephone Gambit: Chasing Alexander Graham Bell’s Secret, is a nonfiction, historical detective story (W.W. Norton, January, 2008). Early feedback has been very encouraging. I hope you’ll pick up a copy and let me know what you think.
For several years now, I've split my time between complex and engaging historical stories, like The Telephone Gambit, and contemporary investigative reporting, like my recent book Undermining Science: Suppression and Distortion in the Bush Administration (University of California Press, 2006), which is due out this spring in a new, updated paperback edition.
Other writing
My other books include: Unlocking the Sky: Glenn Hammond Curtiss and the Race to Invent the Airplane (HarperCollins, 2003); Owning the Future (Houghton Mifflin, 1999) chronicling fights over patenting in high-tech fields; and The Threat at Home: Confronting the Toxic Legacy of the U.S. Military (Beacon Press, 1992). For more on any of these, click on the “books” link above.
As you will see on my bio page, I've also written many articles for publications including The Atlantic, Discover, Nature, Parade, Rolling Stone, The Progressive, Smithsonian and Technology Review. You can read some of these articles here.

My reporting has taken me on many adventures, from the high-security nuclear facilities of the Hanford Reservation in Washington State to the oceanfront labs of scientists in Florida studying the migration of sea turtles. I've accompanied teams of scientists digging deep down into the earth's crust, and others at lonely desert listening posts monitoring the seismic activity of the sun.
I'm fascinated by the ingenious means we have used to study the world around us, and by inventors past and present. I also have a related penchant for artifacts of all kinds, and this site is illustrated with some of the old gizmos and cherished items I keep scattered about my office for inspiration.
